93 Ponds of Rhode Island

"A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature, it is earth's eye."
-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

These simple drawings of ink pooled in the shape of 93 real ponds and lakes in Rhode Island hint at possible underwater terrains, and create a tension between data and fiction. Only the very edge of the ink pool is accurate to the shoreline of the pond, outlining islands, dams, bays, peninsulas, and roadways. The ink has reticulated in a way that is evocative of a bathymetry (underwater topography) chart, but has no correlation to the landscape.
